Dedicated to a dear friend of mine.

Day 365,000,000.

0 days left.

No more waiting.

Closing the Clockwork Journal, the dark knight rose from his bed. It was time to wake his princess. There was no other moment worth living for, but tonight. This was it. He had waited so long, but it's time.

The wooden door to his hut eased open and the cold-his cold- enveloped him once again.
Every twelve hours, this was his routine. His eyes snapped open-there was no in between sleep. No early morning grogginess. Just on, and off- then he left his home and made the long twelve-hour journey to the other side. Away from the darkness, the cold, and the stars, and into the warmth of his long lost lover.

It wasn't a grueling walk, just a tiring one, but after a millennia of walking the same path, he had grown immune to the sweat, the heavy breathing and any heart beat he could have left.

He had grown so immune, in fact, that he didn't even notice the others rushing by him down the same dirt path. For many miles down this road people followed him, while they came in few, they were there.

He took one single passage all the way to his destination, except for one fork in the road. The left was the one most traveled by the humans. It was where they all go to find their dreams for the evening.

The dark knight always took the right path, though. The one less traveled. It was a desolate patch of dirt where the plants overgrew the edges. Occasionally, a person's head would go too far into the clouds and take this path too, but the knight always made sure to steer them in the right direction.

Tonight he went faster, his feet taking longer strides in a quicker rhythm. He was almost there. He could see the light at the end of the path where the trees fell out and her world lay.

The moist, dark soil dried up and slowly turned into soft tufts of grass and white lilies that sprouted from the ground. Amongst the blossoms lay the most beautiful woman any human mind could ever conjure. Light blonde hair fell down past her shoulders and her thin white dress lay over her like a blanket. Her skin shimmered and glowed almost as bright as the light she really was.

"I love you," the knight whispered, kneeling next to the woman. Her eyes fluttered open, revealing all the color they held.

"It's today, isn't it?" She asked with a smile.

The knight nodded, happiness overwhelming what was left of his soul, as the only thing he loved flew into his arms.

~~

Down on Earth, while all were asleep and dreaming, the sky was suddenly illuminated. The sun passed behind the moon, and the world caught a quick glimpse at a love that was never meant to be.
.
